If you need help on what to do when someone dies, read

Did you know that the administration of your estate could cost your family £££ Thousands?
Just look at the charges by some banks and trust companies, if you can find their prices. Make sure you know the charges before you appoint a professional executor.
The only way you’ll get your estate administered free is to burden a friend or relative! However, there will still be some costs involved if the executor or administrator needs to apply for Probate or Letters of Administration.
Some helpful hints can be found at
netprobate.co.uk, including draft letters and a spreadsheet.
For a free probate spreadsheet in Microsoft Excel to manage an estate and produce the Estate Accounts, find a Zip version

Just remember, if your estate is relatively simple, of low value, or passing to a Spouse or Civil Partner, you might not need to get probate but could deal with the estate with indemnities.
You won’t normally need probate for assets in joint names (except ‘tenants in common’) as these pass to the surviving holder regardless of your Will. Spouses and Partners often have everything in joint names to make life simple, except the odd ISA or PEP which have to be in sole names.
Be aware that you might be doubling your probate costs if you have bank accounts or assets outside of England and Wales, including the Channel Islands and Isle of Man, which have their own legal systems.
